Chemical X

Introduction

Ever wanted to mix Lacewing flies and skin of boomslang to brew polyjuice potion? Think you could concoct the Elixir of Life? Well, since you can't do either, what you could do is come to Chemical X at Shaastra 2008...
Get past the intricacies of our preliminary round and we will let you have fun with potions... Its your chance to see whether you have what it takes to be an alchemist and try to replicate the colours of the rainbow in,well, a test tube. At the end of the day it'll be your ingenuity pitted against the best of the rest. Dare to be the champion? Care to beat the rest? Chemical X is the litmus test.



Event Format

Prelims

The preliminary round will have a set of 25 questions. Participants will be tested mostly on their knowledge of chemistry related to inorganic analysis. Few questions will be on the lines of 'How things work'.This round will include few video questions where clips of particular reactions will be shown, and you have to answer questions about those reactions. Each team can have a maximum of 2 members.

Finals

The final round will be the 'hands on' part of the event. Teams which qualify for this round will be shown prepared coloured solutions in test tubes. The main objective of teams would be to synthesise compounds which match the colours of the sample solutions to closest possible extent. This round will last one hour. Teams will compete to reproduce all the given colours in the shortest possible time. 8 teams will compete in the final round.

Rules and Regulations

  1. Each team can have a maximum of 2 members.
  2. The chemicals required to make the coloured compounds will be provided. Teams will may use only the chemicals which we provide. You will not be permitted to bring any substances from outside.
  3. Teams entering the final round will be expected to write a short note on what you have done to maintain transparency.

  • Do we have to bring any lab equipment or chemicals for this event?
    No, teams are not required to bring any lab equipment or chemicals for this event. Everything necessary to complete the final round will be provided by us.
  • Do we need to bring anything to maintain our safety while competing in the lab?
    No, we will provide lab coats and protective goggles to ensure your safety while in the lab.
  • Where do we register for this event ?
    Registrations will be done on the spot. So all you have to do is turn up for this event with your teammate.
