Introduction

"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." - Steve Jobs

The key to any engineering innovation lies in its conceptual design. The basic mechanisms and components working in perfect symphony transform the concept to a workable device. From the simplest to the most sophisticated devices are all driven by interesting mechanisms.

CAD and 3D modeling softwares have revolutionized the ways of realizing ideas. Gone are the days where paper and pencil are essential for a designer. All one has to do is to put one’s creative skills to work.

DES MOD is all about assimilating raw imaginations and exploiting the engineering skills in structuring the ideas into a well defined 3D model. The event would not only test your knowledge of the software but also challenges your ability to metamorphise your imagination into reality!

Total Prize money: Rs. 14,000

Event Format

  • The event will be on the spot testing, with no pre registration required.
  • Participants are expected to turn up in teams of two.
  • Prelims

Participants will be familiarized with the particular modeling software in use and then the participant's basic knowledge of the 3D modeling environment and the software will be tested by conducting a short modeling test on simple designs. The top ten or fifteen teams qualify for the final round.
  • Finals

Teams qualifying in the prelims will move on to the finals where they would be asked to provide a mechanism for a given problem and present it on the software.
  • The designs will be tested for their engineering content and elegance.
  • Innovative solutions will earn appreciation!

Rules and Regulations

  • Teams can have a maximum of two members.
  • Registration should be done at the Hospitality desk on the day of the event or the previous day.
  • In the finals the participants will be expected to complete their 3D model within a specified time, around 2 to 3 hours depending on the problem statement.

FAQ

  1. Do I have to pre-register for the event?
The event is an on the spot event, you need not register for the event online, you would have to register for it at the hospitality desk on the day of the event or the day before it.
  2. Do I have to make any physical models ?
NO. You need not make any physical models. You would have to model and present your solution on the given 3D modelling software.
  3. Do I need to know any modeling softwares?
Yes. You need to have familiarity with 3D modeling environment, but the knowledge of the particular 3D modeling software being used is not expected. Before the prelims, there will be a short (1 hour) session to familiarize the participants with the software being used.
  4. Should all quantitative details be incorporated in the design?
No. We are expecting a qualitative design, but certain critical dimensions have to be quantitative. The practicality and feasibility of the design will be considered while judging.

Sample Problems

  • Design a Hand held staple sewing machine

The machine should stitch by an action similar to stapling action. One important module is the bobbin mechanism. Also ensure that when the needle goes in and out of the cloth during the stitch, the cloth is held stationary (so as to not tear the cloth). This should be followed by the forward motion of the cloth by a specific pitch.
  • Toy Bird

Design a mechanism whose output is a bird kind of structure moving to and fro with synchronous flapping of wings. The input is constant rotary motion. See the following link for the animation of the mechanism Flying-Pig Concentrate on the mechanism part, the bird structure need not be given much importance. Participants are not expected to do the animation, but are expected to come up with the mechanism.

These are just the sample problems to give you a flavour of the event.
