"There are engineers who make 100 storey buildings and those who make underground tunnels. There are those who make really powerful engines and those who work in research labs. And then there are those who work to bring down the price of rice in the villages of India.”
A scientist worries not what it costs, knows not what he will find. Technology uses cutting edge science for a purpose. With cost at the back of his mind, an engineer must employ his genius for the benefit of mankind.
So we want you engineers who can come up with cost effective applications of technology and bridge the gap between science and our society.
Engenious is a showcase of genuine, cost effective designs that help in taking the best of the technology to the rural population and urban slums within the constraints of resources. Note that new technology is never cost effective but proper packaging of the available technology in a design has been more successful in reaching to the rural sections.
Teams may send a report of their design by 15th September as per the instructions below. There shall be one or two rounds of filtering and the qualifying teams will be sent a list of suggestions for improvement along with guidance for building a prototype.
The finalists will have to present their designs in front of the jury in Shaastra2008. Though we do not discourage conceptual designs, protyping of any scale is strongly recommended and needless to mention the weightage to prototyping in adjudicating.
It is going to be a Design and Present event with 4 to 5 members per team. Problem statements could be multidisciplinary and hence proper teaming might be crucial. Each team will be given 20 to 30 minutes to present (might change depending on the number of finalists) which would include a 7-8 minute question and answer session. A computer, projector and an A.C. power source (230 V, 50Hz) shall be provided but any other requirements (subject to availability and feasibility) should be notified well in advance.
