Design And Build

Fire N' ICE

Introduction

Fire N’ ICE at Shaastra has been supersized. Think big trucks, big air and big bucks. Think Big Foot and Scarlet Bandit. Think Big.

At Fire N’ ICE, we aim to make engineering big fun.

Total prize money: Rs. 55,000

Build a fully remote-controlled monster truck powered by an IC engine to go around a track in the shortest possible time. The track may consist of jumps, rough terrain, sand pits and tight turns. Visual appeal and design will be considered in final evaluation of entry.

Registration

Registration for Fire n' ICE will start from 21st August 2008. The last date of submission of the registration form is 10th September 2008. Entries selected to participate in the event will be declared by 15th September.

To register for the event, participants must register for team event in the user portal and submit the given registration form along with some pictures, CAD drawings/model (this is mandatory) and a video of their model in zip/rar format.

For accommodation, participants will need to register separately with hospitality. They will need to submit a small abstract of their design at the time of registration.

The event will be held in three parts:

Design write-ups:

The design write-up submitted along with the registration from will be reviewed and entries will be judged on the basis of individuality and innovation in design and fabrication. Please note that entries which are adjudged to lack originality, or show evidence of professional intervention are liable to be summarily rejected.

Qualifying Rounds

These will include three competitions which are outlined below. The top 6 qualifiers overall will proceed to the finals.

Entries will be judged according to various criteria by the following methods:

  • Traction / Power
A pulley system will be used to attach the truck to a given weight as illustrated. The truck will have to pull the weight by a certain distance. The teams will be awarded points on the basis of time required.
  • Acceleration / Traction:
This will be a straight line drag race on a given length of asphalt road.

Final Race:

As mentioned earlier the 6 top teams from the qualifying rounds will proceed to the finals.

The final 6 teams will be competing in a checkpoint race in an open arena. The arena will be part of a playground with checkpoints placed at random. Note that the arena will NOT be smoothed in any way. Participants are thus advised to expect considerable unevenness in the track.

The further details on the final track will be updated shortly.

Technical Specifications

  1. Engine:
    • Maximum piston displacement allowed is 3.5 cc.
    • There is no restriction on the type of IC engine (either glow or diesel cycle engine), but the engine must have throttle control.
    • It is also not necessary to use engine specifically made for car/trucks, airplane engines can be used however they will require torque increment by using gears.
  2. Fuel:
    • The fuel to be is should only have these constituents, methanol, castor oil/synthetic oil, nitro methane. The percentage of nitro methane should not exceed 20% by volume in the fuel.
    • Utmost one filter can be used in the fuel line.
  3. Vehicle dimensions**:
    • The completed truck should be able to fit in a box of dimensions 550mmX400mmX350mm
    • Antennae (if used) are exempt from the height restriction.
    • The tires should be minimum 100 mm in diameter (B=50 mm) and 40 mm wide.
    • Monster truck must have a minimum of 3.5 cm of ground clearance when suspensions are fully compressed.
  4. Parts that are to be fabricated by the participants:
    • The chassis
    • The body cover
    • Suspensions system
    • Steering mechanism
    • Platform for the electronics, engines and fuel tank.
  5. Parts which can be used as available in the market or can be procured from toy cars:
    • Gear box assembly, Differentials (if used)
    • Suspension springs, Shock absorbers
    • Drive-line and rods
    • Tires and wheels
    • Clutch system
    • Brake system
  6. Power supply
    • The machine must have an on-board power supply to provide power to any mechanism requiring electric power.
    • The potential difference between any two points on the machine should not exceed 12V at any point of time.
  7. Clutch and brake: (strongly advised for maneuvering but not necessary)
    • As some of the races will be held on loose sand, it is very likely that wheel speed will vary to a large extent. The engine may die out if the rpm goes below a certain limit.
    • Therefore, participants are strongly advised to incorporate a clutch and a brake in their designs.
    • Please note that these are not mandatory.
  8. Radio controllers:
    • The machine has to be necessarily controlled by a wireless remote control system.
    • Note that participants are required to bring 2 remote controls of distinct frequencies or a dual- frequency remote control.
    • Note also the teams will have to control three components of the car viz. the engine throttle, steering and brake system(if used).
  9. Exhaust:
    • All vehicles must have an exhaust system that directs the exhaust parallel to the ground or directly at the ground.
    • Silencers must be intact while the vehicle is running.
  10. Participants are advised to use robust suspensions with large travel and ensure adequate ground clearance owing to the off-road nature of some of the races.

Note that it is absolutely mandatory to completely cover the chassis, gearbox etc. of the vehicle. A separate award has been reserved for the best design and bodywork.

**rules related to vehicle dimensions have been slightly modified from before.

General Rules

  • If the machine is found unsafe to run on the track, that team will be disqualified from the race. The coordinators decision will be final and binding in this respect.
  • All vehicles should have a complete body covering all internal mechanisms of the vehicle.
  • Judges decision shall be treated as final and binding on all.
  • At the time of registration, teams will be provided with a registration number and allotted time for qualifying rounds
  • Any team that is not ready at the arena at the time specified will be automatically disqualified.
  • The vehicles are not allowed to leave any loose parts on any part of the arena. Any vehicle disintegrating during the race will be disqualified.
  • The teams must adhere to the spirit of healthy competition. The coordinators reserve the right to disqualify any team indulged in misbehavior.

Team Specification

  • A team may consist of maximum 5 members. It is not mandatory for all the members of a team to be from the same educational institution.
  • Each team must consist of at least 2 members.

Participants will need to submit pictures of their vehicle. We require pictures showing all major components of the vehicle in sufficient detail. Participants are requested to use at least a 5 MP camera. Participants will be emailed a form regarding the various specifications of their vehicles, after registration. They are required to fill up this form and mail it to the coordinators at least 2 weeks prior to the event.

The organizers reserve the rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be highlighted on the website. We will endeavor to notify all registered participants of such changes. All participants are requested to visit the Fire N’ ICE event page on the Shaastra 2008 website regularly. Please feel free to contact us if needed.
