How Things Work has been an integral part of Shaastra for several editions. HTW, as the event is more popularly known, deals with the working of day-to-day, (and sometimes more exotic!) objects in the world around us. It tests the breadth and scope of the participant’s knowledge, also tests the ability to innovatively apply the concepts he has only learnt in his classroom. Unlike in other quizzes, here, superficial knowledge is only a path to reach the true answer with some engineering imagination. No other serious event gives such a vast playground for the participants' minds.
A great crowd puller at Shaastra, the HTW prelims usually find all available auditoriums in IITM filled to capacity with participants. Over 1500 people try to figure out everything from the science behind the Diet Coke-Mentos eruption to the very intricate functioning of nanotubes. The finals are a revelation in more than one way. After 2 hours of audio, video and good old text questions, both the finalists and the audience are left with the happy glow which comes from watching some of the best minds in the country compete against each other. Of course, the occasional light-hearted answer also helps !
This year's HTW plans to be bigger and better than ever with more questions from all branches of science engineering, and also demonstrations of some cool gadgets.
