Vertical Take-Off and Landing - 2

What once started as "The Tiltrotor Project" has become the "VTOL 2", and built a couple of aircraft for training, experience and proof of concept. Before getting into some proper details about the project, a briefing about how this project came into existence.

It all started with the round of SOE proposals, when the team proposed to build a tiltrotor aircraft for Shaastra. The idea was to build an IC engine powered Tiltrotor aircraft with variable pitch propellers or heli rotors for propulsion. It took 3 long months before the team realised that it was not feasible for a bunch of newbies, thanks to all the experience of the Aero Club, especially Vivek. It was decided to build VTOL aircraft with electric motors as the power source.

The basic funda of the project is to build generic VTOL aircraft that can fly. We have two principles - 1. Don't copy 2. Keep it simple . At this stage, we're working with electric motors that drive constant pitch propellers. "Let there be a Trainer"

And the Trainer VTOL was built in about 2 weeks time. A very very strong structure- made of carbon fibre rods ( obmax it will be strong), depron sheets for wings and an Axi 2826/8, previously used by "U-Fly", a quadrotor.

The best and the worst part of an aircraft is that it flies only when everything is perfect. Being beginners, we did commit a lot of mistakes in building our first aircraft and it's not very stable. It can take-off, fly, but doesn't land. We're working on the control system of this aircraft.

VTOL Flying Wing:

This is the flying wing we're working on right now. The basic structure is built. The landing gear and the control system have to be prepared. And then, we shall proceed to indoor and outdoor testing.

Tiltwing Aircraft:

After the completion of the above two aircraft, the team shall take a step further and build a Tiltwing. The design of the tiltwing is subject mostly to the performance of the flying wing aircraft.
