Junk pushes your creativity. Try making a contraption that bends football trajectories better than Beckham does, out of an abandoned cycle. Maybe even that dreaded "lal ghoda".

Junk makes you appreciate precision. You'll know what it takes to get the right alignment in your mopeds when half the thing is made out of stuff that wasn't made to go together.

Junk makes you more responsible. Four rusted iron beams. And the way you put them together will determine whether your cycle rickshaw will carry 4 people at 30 kmph smoothly, or buckle down under its own weight.

Shaastra Junkyard Wars is the best opportunity to showcase your engineering skills, where imagination and creativity are what will be at stake. When “Stuart Little” could make a plane out of junk, why can’t you? It’s a test for your legerdemain and intuitive thought process.

Limited resources, limited time and a problem to solve. That’s what Junkyard Wars is about. All that you need to have is some jugaad from kabaad.

► No pre-registration is required for this event.
► The teams should have 4 members.
► The testing will be held on the final day and no team will be given any extra time.
► The decision of coordinators is final and binding in any circumstance.
►  For the 1st and 2nd Round the answer booklets will be evaluated with utmost care so the participants will not be shown their corrected answer booklets for revaluation purposes.

Round 1: A preliminary written test where the theoretical understanding of basic engineering principles is tested. Top 20 (maximum 25 ) teams will be make it through to the 2nd round.

Round 2: This is a thought and design oriented round where participants are tested on their design and application skills. Top 6 teams will be short listed for the finals.

Round 3: The final round, this will witness the teams building upon a problem statement.  The teams will be given 2 days to build the design for the final problem statement, which will be disclosed after the second round. They will also be given some time on the 3rd day for finishing touches. Adequate access to the junkyard and the IITM Workshop will be given for building purposes. The testing of the machines will take place on the final day. The winner will be decided based on their machine's performance in this round.

► What do I get out of participating in this event?

  • This event will give you a chance to test how you put simple principles you learn in class, to practice. You get to make a machine out of junk. Where else would you get a free rein with a workshop, tools and material all provided to you? And of course, there is the cash prize.

► What is the duration of the event ?

  • The first two rounds will take place on the first day. The teams will be given 2 days to build the design for the final problem statement, which will be disclosed after the second round. They will also be given some time on the 3rd day for finishing touches.

► Is there any restriction on the participant's year of study ?

  • No.

► Is there any restriction on the branch of the participant?

  • Not at all.

► Do I have to bring anything?

  • No, everything required for the event will be provided by us.

► What kind of stuff do I need to know and do?

  • Nothing really specific. A team consisting of good engineers with decent workshop skills and hands on experience is bound to do well.

► Does the team have to be from the same college?

  • No, We do not impose any such restriction.

► What will be asked in the first round ?

  • The first preliminaries will be a set of questions which will test one’s basic knowledge of engineering principles, workshop practices and one’s fundamental understanding on working of machines.

► What will be the level of working and difficulty in the finals?

  • You won't be asked to do impossible things. Whatever we ask you to do, we will do it ourselves first.
