Since the dawn of time, over a hundred billion humans have walked our planet. They evolved continually in their fight for survival, unaware that their actions were resulting in the dawn of intelligence in man. They waged war against Nature’s forces, using Nature herself as their weapons. Nature was their teacher, and her lessons were harsh. In the cosmic scale of events, Man’s intellect began to evolve. The sum of their collective rationale resulted in the creation of the world around us.

Engineering starts with that dream, that idea. That dream begins to transform, from being a creation in the depths of man’s mind, to a physical object. The physical copy contains the power to fly like a bird, move faster than sound, and destroy worlds. But all of that rests on the rarest quality in all of life – imagination. That is what distinguishes man from Earth’s other life forms.

We can break the atom. We can control the climate. We can travel the Universe. And all this depended on a spark and the evolution of the spark of a thought. The realm of technology has been explored thoroughly for creations that would dazzle men everywhere. In spite of that, today, the horizon of technology is invisible to us. We have become wizards of creation.

At IIT Madras, we understand the importance of technology. We believe that imagination supersedes every other process in engineering. We believe that engineering begins before the first bolt is used, before the first drawing is made.
